IAEA bats for nuclear olympiad success at 68th GenCon
More than 178 Member States of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recognized the successful conduct of the first-ever International Nuclear Science Olympiad at the plenary of the 68th IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria.
In a resolution adopted unanimously on September 20, the IAEA acknowledged the INSO as among the notable examples of its efforts “to better disseminate to the general public, especially the youth, the ideals of the peaceful uses of atomic energy in research and education, particularly its support for research projects and initiatives”.
Earlier at the plenary of the conference on September 17, Department of Energy Undersecretary Sharon Garin also lauded the Philippines’ efforts in hosting the historic and inaugural Olympiad with participants representing several Member States in the Asia-Pacific region, while also looking forward to the second INSO to be hosted by Malaysia this 2025.
Undersecretary Garin led the Philippine delegation to the IAEA General Conference. She was joined by INSO Steering Committee Chairperson Dr. Carlo Arcilla and INSO Local Organizing Committee Chairperson Ms. Ana Elena Conjares.
The INSO was held from August 1-6 at the New Clark City in the Philippines, with eight students winning gold medals, followed by 13 silver and 16 bronze medalists among 55 contenders.
