Philippines to host the 1st International Nuclear Science Olympiad

Philippines to host the 1st International Nuclear Science Olympiad

Among the myriad but prestigious international science olympiads, there’s a new kid on the block ready to break new ground in yet another challenging field of science: the International Nuclear Science Olympiad!

To spearhead this new frontier for nuclear science in the global education scene, the Philippines takes the role of hosting the 1st INSO in August 2024 at New Clark City, Pampanga.

The newly-established Olympiad will be an annual international competition for junior and senior secondary school students younger than 20 years old. Apart from the aim of increasing global awareness on the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology, the INSO also particularly intends to enhance the interest of secondary school students, and to improve the teaching of nuclear concepts in educational institutions.

Long-term, the INSO also aims to eventually motivate participants to pursue courses and professions related to nuclear S&T. This remains particularly relevant in Asia and the Pacific, which is home to a fast-growing population of young professionals in a wide variety of sectors using nuclear and radiation-related applications.

Pioneering participants in the INSO are from the Asia-Pacific region, such as Malaysia, China, Singapore, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Iran, Jordan, and the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Japan representatives will join as observers. Also invited to join are Syria, Indonesia, and Bahrain.

Deadline of the pre-registration is on April 15. All participants are expected to have completed their registration requirements by May 31, 2024.

Co-organizers include the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Education, DOST-National Research Council of the Philippines and the Philippine Nuclear Science Foundation. Partnering with the DOST-PNRI for the INSO are Meralco and Aboitiz.

The hosting of the 1st INSO is likewise supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency via IAEA TC Project RAS/0/091"Supporting Nuclear Science and Technology Education at the Secondary and Tertiary Level."
